Abstract
The article discusses the reign of Queen Elizabeth I during the 1590s in England. The authors reflect on continued war with Spain and English intervention in France and the Netherlands. Emphasis is given to funding of the war effort through taxation and the influence of the Tudor dynasty on public opinion. Other topics include the political career of Robert Devereux, Second Earl of Essex, and historiography that describes the era in terms of decline and crisis.
