Abstract
Ethnic stratification within organizations implies the differential ordering of ethnic or national groups into particular segments or “strata” of a single social organization, usually signaling a form of ethnic inequality whereby some ethnic groups occupy more advantageous strata than others. Social organizations represent the overt coordination of the activity of a number of people in the interest of achieving specific objectives. Examples of organizations include corporations, sports teams, social movements, trade unions, political parties, and whole nations. Organizations become ethnically stratified through how they select and generate membership and how they organize people internally, and these features are underpinned by three main social processes: differential access to and recognition of qualifications and credentials; the categorical assumptions of organizational gatekeepers and systems; and forms of social closure that result from ethnically bound social networks.
