Abstract
The sentence‐picture verification task has received a great deal of attention over the years, and it has been a source of many interesting findings concerning the relationships between individual differences in people's abilities, task performance and strategy selection. However, there are a number of problems with interpreting data from this task as it appears to be particularly difficult to reliably classify subjects into distinct strategy groups. The purpose of this work was to review the various classification systems used by previous researchers and assess their validity. No system was found to be without problems, and it is suggested that previous conclusions derived from this task may not be justified.
