Abstract
Lightstreams sheds light on the experiences of first-generation migrant health-care workers in the UK, offering a poignant exploration of sacrifice and choices made during unprecedented times. It offers a moving and heartfelt portrayal, shining a spotlight on the issues of migration and displacement in the aftermath of global crises. Through an experimental style, it tells the story of a migrant married couple from a country at the edge of Continental Europe living in the UK : Hermia, a mother of one in her late twenties, tries to stop her husband from going to work; and Maurice, a man in his 30s, Hermia’s husband, a carer in an elderly home, would sacrifice everything to fit in British society. Hermia is in the business of complaining and talking on the phone with Darya, who lives in the care home where Maurice works. At the eve of a global crisis, Maurice needs to make the ultimate sacrifice of leaving his wife and his 2-year old son behind and live in the care-home till the crisis is averted. But he cannot bring himself to tell Hermia. The material for the script was conceived as part of the "Economies of Care" project, funded by the University of Essex, in collaboration with Dr. Phoebe Kisubi Mbasalaki from the Sociology department.
