Abstract
In this article, I defend the thesis that aesthetic recognition is a distinct and previously overlooked variant of recognition, on the basis of which a critical theory of recognition can be developed. First, I present my conception of aesthetic recognition, which expands the spectrum of recognition relationships known from Hegel and Honneth, and explain my reinterpretation of modern aesthetics that underlies this conception of aesthetic recognition. Aesthetic recognition concerns the consideration we owe to each other as sensory perceiving, emotionally responding, and imaginatively gifted beings. Against this background, I then outline the research program of a critical theory of aesthetics. To this end, I address two fundamental tasks that a critical theory of aesthetics must deal with, and illustrate these tasks using examples of aesthetic pathologies and aesthetic disregard.
