Abstract
This report summarises findings from a workshop entitled “Syrian Futures: Legal Justice, Artistic Practice, and Social Transformation” held at the Essex Human Rights Centre in July 2024. The workshop brought together Syrian artists, academics, architects, and practitioners to explore how artistic expression, and academic insight might inform approaches to transitional justice in Syria. Through analysis of artistic presentations and academic discussions, the report examines how integrating creative practices with traditional justice mechanisms could address the unique challenges posed by Syria’s prolonged conflict. The report highlights the work of four Syrian artists whose diverse approaches to processing trauma, preserving memory, and imagining future possibilities demonstrate art’s potential contribution to transitional justice processes. It also explores how colonial legacies continue to shape Syria’s challenges and considers the vital role of diaspora perspectives in shaping future governance frameworks. Key themes include the importance of creating spaces for dialogue and truth-telling, the need to acknowledge both shared and unshared histories, and the value of incorporating diverse cultural practices into formal justice mechanisms. The report concludes with recommendations for transitional justice institutions working in the Syrian context, emphasising the need for inclusive, culturally grounded approaches to reconciliation and justice. These insights have gained particular urgency following Syria’s recent political transformation in December 2024.
