Abstract
The article focuses on the terms ‘Bedouin’ and ‘Sedentary’ that have been widely used to classify Arabic dialects, arguing that their usefulness as social categories in Arabic sociolinguistics is limited and can be misleading. The discussion is illustrated through analysis of sociolinguistic developments in Jordan, highlighting the multiple social meanings that these terms can assume as they interact with gender, religion and religiosity, occupation, state formation and national identity. Keywords: Arabic sociolinguistics, Bedouin–Sedentary split, Jordanian Arabic
