Abstract
The aim of this chapter is to discuss theory building in second language acquisition research, and in particular how and whether the different schools of research currently active within the field can or indeed need to talk to one another, if we are to build a comprehensive SLA theory. My aim is to draw an overarching conceptual map of the field as I understand it; this will necessarily involve a certain amount of oversimplification, as well as my own theoretical biases.
