Coaching Athletes, Educating Parents: Five Practical Strategies for Youth Sport Coaches

Managing relationships with parents is a central challenge for many youth sport coaches. In recent years, increasing expectations, sideline behaviours, and easy access to sport-related information have intensified parent–coach interactions, often contributing to conflict and coach stress. This article presents five practical strategies to help coaches establish clear expectations, communicate effectively, and build productive relationships with parents. The strategies emphasise proactive planning, structured communication, and appropriate parental involvement. Practical tools, including a sample agreement and meeting templates, are provided to support implementation.
