Abstract
This paper extends the licensing literature to allow firms to choose the age of the technology which is licensed as well as the structure of payment for the license. When newer technology is equated with technology of higher quality, firms may use the age of the technology in conjunction with the royalty level in order to maximize licensing profits and discourage imitation. When newer technology is equated with technology of more uncertain quality, older technology may be licensed because its licensing contract requires less rent-sharing.
