Abstract
Identity is often defined as a reflexive process that the self is engaged with, which regulates one's action, involving the individual experience in relation to broader social processes. The locus of identity is understood to be either intrinsically within the mind, or is co-constructed through socio-cultural interactions. Focussing on both individual and collective understandings, studies on identity have gained increasing interest in MOS and CMS from the 1990s to the early 2000s. As this entry will show, distinctly CMS contributions to research on identity has been linked to various topics such as empowerment, politics, feminism, control, and resistance.
