Abstract
BTEX are toxic and soluble, and so it is important to monitor their fate in groundwater. Two BTEX-contaminated aquifers underlying petrochemical plants, in the UK and in Germany, have been used as research sites for monitoring and management of natural attenuation. This chapter summarizes some of the recent work carried out at these reference sites: SIReN (Site for Innovative Research in Natural Attenuation) and RETZINA (Reference Test Site Zeitz for the Implementation of the Natural Attenuation Approach).
