Abstract
The manuscripts left by Daniel Coutinho, better known as Master Noronha (1909-77), represent a crucially important source for our understanding of the martial art capoeira in Bahia during the first half of the twentieth century. The article situates the manuscripts within the corpus of primary sources about capoeira, assesses the richness of the information it contains about the practice, and more generally the popular culture of the city of Salvador, and how they have been used in innovative works by historians more recently.
