Abstract
Goblin Market: Irish New Contemporary Art is the first book of its kind to be printed to date. Driven and influenced by the Lowbrow art movement that emerged in America in the 1970's, the various stylistic offshoots have gradually made their way to Europe and the U.K. Each country, and in some cases each city, has its own artistic language and interpretation of the style, and Ireland is no exception. This art movement is not embraced by the overwhelming majority of art institutions and galleries in Ireland. On the whole, it remains a style of expression that belongs to artists who are outside the accepted definition of Art in Ireland today, but whose work is hugely popular when exhibited in pop-up exhibitions and artist solo shows. Featuring 35 of Ireland's most exciting New Contemporary artists, working in styles such as Street Art, Cartoon, Graffiti, Body Horror, Pop Surrealism, Lowbrow and Urban.
