Abstract
This project exists as both a practice research project and as application of research stemming from my monograph Training Actors Voices and various related publications. “Land(marked) Voices” was a community-based participatory project 2022-2024 with funding from the UoE Participatory Research Fund. The project investigated the role of voice and identity through spoken word poetry using the ‘Essex Girl’ stereotype as a departure point. It partnered with Westcliff High School for Girls, and Write2Speak, Spoken Word poetry specialists. The project produced an online audio installation accessed via QR codes funded by The Being Human Festival. The project was picked up by BBC’s The One Show for a news/interest story on accent prejudice (Tuesday 7 January 2025, https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0026pkh approx 14.30mins in).
