Abstract
The sociology of religion is a branch of social science that aims to describe and explain religion in society through empirical investigation and testable theory. It is concerned with individual beliefs and behavior on the one hand and norms and institutions on the other, and with their reciprocal influences. Sociologists seek to explain how religion is affected by social forces and how religion affects other domains in society. This article is a replacement of the previous edition article by R.
